Brooklands Museum – Director of Collections Role Advertised

Details of a new role at Brooklands Museum:

The Museum is seeking a new Director of Collections, Interpretation and Heritage who is passionate about bringing history alive for people; telling stories of science, engineering, industry and innovation in ways that enthral and excite people of all ages and backgrounds and who wants to play a key leadership role in this growing, ambitious, independent museum.

Brooklands Museum is on the site of the world’s first purpose built motor racing circuit and the most productive aircraft factories in Europe in the twentieth century. Brooklands’ heritage includes themes of inventiveness, adventure, ambition and engineering innovation. The museum is well-known and loved by enthusiasts, and has a growing family audience. Our aim in coming years is to bring out its interest and relevance to the wider public.

It is an exciting time to join the museum. A new CEO started earlier this year, and much of the site will be reinterpreted and developed over the coming years, building on the extremely successful new £8m development of the Brooklands Aircraft Factory and Flight Shed exhibitions, completed last year.

The ideal candidate will have a good knowledge of motor sport and / or aviation collections, with a background in engineering and experience of working collections, as using collections is a key principle of the museum. Experience of working with a large team of enthusiastic, knowledgeable volunteers would be helpful. Crucially, the post holder will be able to lead the development and implementation of a site-wide interpretation plan that will engage visitors with the Brooklands story and bring it to life for a wide-range of types of visitors.
